Exercise 5: Adding to the Basic Wash
PAINTS:
For this exercise I suggest you will need:-
French Ultramarine Blue: Prussian Blue: Cadmium Yellow: Cadmium Red
Now that you have achieve a basic wash
you are able to use it to create a very simple picture based on this picture:--
How to Begin:
Note that the background tone is very even throughout the photo but it is intersected by a horizon with trees and a white yacht.
The process is very similar for many paintings i.e. producing a background wash which is then painted over.
- Mix a strong green colour using the two blues and cadmium yellow. Take a brush full of the strong mix and place it somewhere on the palette and add more water to it to make a very weak mixture. Test it on a spare piece of paper and it should just colour the paper. When you are happy paint in the very distant horizon which may be visible between the two dark areas and to the left of the yacht.
Tip: Make sure that the horizon is horizontal.
- When it has dried, using the strong mix, over paint the weak wash and create the trees drawing them in with the brush - don't be tempted to use a pencil!
- Whilst the tree area is drying, with a clean moistened brush (round or flat) moisten the blue area below the horizon taking care not to go too close. When it is moist, gently wash out some of the blue paint to create lighter areas - say three bands, if it helps dab off the colour with kitchen roll. Try to keep the lines softened.
Allow to dry completely.
- Cut out a template the shape of the yacht - the best material for this is a sheet of firm plastic - acetate sheet is ideal although thick paper will do the job on a small scale.
- Lay the template over the position for the yacht and using a moist sponge wash out the paint until white paper is showing, dab dry with kitchen roll.
- Finally wipe out, using a moistened brush, the reflection immediately under the yacht and 2 or 3 more further down the paper When this has dried paint in the hull of the yacht using a strong mix of cadmium red.
