Patric Bown; The Tutor

Patric prefers to introduce students at the very beginning of the art.

Helping to keep the initial costs down he suggests that initially, students need only use seven colours, from these over one hundred hues can be produced by colour mixing either on the paper or in the palette.

Colour density (light and dark mixes) is also important and this leads on naturally to applying washes of all descriptions.

Painting shapes and objects provide good practical example of applying paint to the paper and this leads on to explainations and excercises in simplified perspective.

By the end of a few weeks students are able to manage painting simple landscapes and paint from photographic material.

His major objectives are:-

  1. the encouragement of students in the good use of colour;
  2. colour mixing on the paper to provide transpraency and luminosity in the final work:
  3. The value of tone in a picture thereby providing good darks while maintaining the light without using white paint: and finally
  4. The students enjoyment.
